This is what I had in mind

The Pitch

I am an A Level student and for my coursework I plan on creating a music video for the song 'Apologies' by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The video would have 3 interlinking narratives that will be cut together. One of these three would be the singer, another is a woman (the singer) coming home and watching a tape and the final is the narrative of what is on a tape. I think that what I envision this music video as will complement the song greatly. I also think that my audience will like it as I have found from my research that most people enjoy it when there is a story being told that encompasses the song.

The Treatment

During the first 19 seconds of the song a woman (WA) unlocks a door and walks into her house. She picks up the mail off the floor and sorts through it. She then drops a few small envelopes on the side table and her bag on the floor while she carries on walking through to the living room looking at a big A4 envelope. She sits on the sofa and starts opening it.
At .20 seconds in it will cut to a woman singing the first lines. This woman could be in the room with WA or in a completely different scene such as a forest or by a river on a dock. At .31 seconds the camera will cut back to WA as she puts the tape in and at approximately .42 seconds she and a man come up onto the screen (these two will be referred to as TV couple). The camera is still on WA at this point, and she is looking in the envelope and taking out a script. While she is doing this TV couple will be visible in the background (they will just be watching a TV, the scene will be dark with the TV light flickering on there faces) on the TV, the camera will slowly pan away from WA to the TV and and at 1.17 it will zoom in until the TV couple are the scene, not just on the TV. As you are looking at the screen the woman will be on the left and the man on the right. As the couple are watching TV the woman will go to hold the mans hand and he will pull away, stand up and walk out of the room, crossing in front of the woman while she watches him walk away. She will then turn of the TV and sit in the dark until 1.29 when the camera fades out and cuts back to the singer until 1.37 when it cuts back to the TV couple, who are now in bed. The lighting would be minimal. The woman would appear to be sleeping and the man would get up and sneak out by 1.44. At 1.44 - 1.54 we would see the man walking out the front door and the woman standing at their bedroom window watching him walk away. When the song gets to 1.55 the camera would zoom out so you could see this happening on WA's TV and the she would pause the scene.
When the songs reaches 2 minutes WA will start looking through the script and fast forwarding the tape. At 2.15 she would resume playing it and we would see the TV couple laughing and kissing (possibly at the same place where the singer is singing). WA would then continue fast forwarding until 2.30 when the TV scene would show the woman cooking dinner. The TV couple man would walk in and she as she went to kiss him she would see lipstick on his collar and at 2.35 she would step back and start asking him about it (the viewer would not hear what she is saying but the body language would make it apparent). They would continue arguing, at 2.42 she would throw down a plate then at 2.48/.49 he would try to hug/grab her arms and she would push him away at 2.50. Then at 2.57 he would throw up his arms and yell 'FINE' and leave.(The scene from 2.30 - 3.00 ish would be in 'slow motion'. It would then zoom out while she is crying to the script laying on the table opened on the last page with the words 'HE EXITS' at roughly 3.09
At 3.11 it would cut back to the singer until 3.31/.32 when it would cut back to the woman in the flat. She would turn off the TV and get up and walk to the bedroom where she would wake up a new man. He would smile and kiss her then get up to go to the bathroom. The camera would then cut to the kitchen and her making two cups of tea, as the new man walks out in work clothes he looks at his watch and says 'sorry I've got to go' so she puts down the milk and walks him to the door.
It opens they both walk out a bit, the new man turns to kiss WA while she stands in the doorway. She has her eyes open when they kiss and she sees the original man across the street walking with some shopping (Tesco bags). At 4.13 the new man leaves and WA has a sad longing face while looking across at the original man. At 4.18 she turns to go back into her house and it cuts between her and the singer then at 4.37 WA gives a final small smile to the original man and closes the door. She then leans her body against it. The camera cuts to the man looking at the door until 4.55 when he turns and continues walking.
WA then goes and ejects the tape and the viewer sees her drop it into the bin with the script. The camera will then zoom in or out on this until the songs ends about 2 seconds later.
